CuttleBug -Die Cutting Machine

Cuttlebug Die Cutting Machine

The Cuttlebug  made by Provocraft is one of the most popular die cutting machine. It has no electricity which makes it green cuttlebugvery portable. Another feature of this machine is that it also does embossing techniques. It folds together making the storage space minimal. The package comes with the Cricut machine, one A plate, and two B plates.

The machine features three processing plates. The plates are called the A, B And C plates. The B and C plates are clear acrylic plates. The acrylic plates are where the die or embossing folder go. The C plate is the base plate and is a hard plastic. When you place the die or embossing folder between the acrylic plates and on top of the base plate, this is called a “sandwhich”. It is the pressure that is applied to the sandwich that creates the embossing or die cut.

In addition to the standard plates, there are two additional plates that are available. These are for longer dies such as boarder dies. They are a separate.

The sandwhich is the order that the plates are placed to either cut or emboss. Once you make the sandwhich,  you place the sandwhich on the tray of the Cuttlebug and gently push it through while turning the handle.

Sometimes the plates will warp after use. Even if they are “bowed” a little, they are still useable. Just keep the bowed side down.

When your B plates are new, rotate them side to side to minimize warping. Just put a post it note when you are done for the day, to indicate where you left off,

One of the features of the Cuttlebug that makes it so handy is the suction feature. When you open the machine on a smooth surface, the suction on the bottom of the machine makes it stick. just open both sides at the same time and the suction  feature activates

You will notice some wear and tear on your plates. This is normal and does not affect the die cuts or embossing .

You may also notice a cracking sound when you are die cutting or embossing. That is totally normal.

The Die Cutting Side of the Cuttlebug

One of the nicest features of the Cuttlebug is that it will use just about any die. That means that if you find a die that you like from another company, you can use it with this machine.

Processing A Die Cut

Die cuts have a metal top and foam underneath.  You can buy them in a pack of four or singly. Again, you can use almost any die cut on the market with this machine.

Remember to set your die a little away from the leading edge of the plate when you set up your andwich

The Embossing Side of the Cuttlebug

The best feature of this machine is that it can emboss paper, but it can also emboss metal, leather, ribbon and a host of other materials. Cricut who makes the Cuttlebug also features a group of metal cut outs that are called Embossables.

Embossing Tips

      1. You can lightly sand an embossed paper to make it stand out more. The four sided blocks that you use for your nails are good for this technique.
      2. You can use apply ink to your embossed paper to give the embossing a contrast.
      3. On intricate designs you need to go slowly through the machine to prevent tearing of the paper
